Thandie Newton is a person fascinated by the idea of self and this inspires her video. She starts off by saying that as a baby there is no idea of self by infantness, that nobody is worried about being different at least none of the babies are and there is no problem with the self as it doesn't know it exists. Like Holden Caulfield in the Catcher in the Rye by J. D Salinger. Holden has a very good definition of himself he knows what he wants and what he likes and if you don't fit in then he essentially flames on you (makes fun of). Holden also has a hard time with depression and fitting in, his biggest problem is with the schools he attends and he perceives many grown ups as phonies. This sparks his initial ideas of rebellion toward authority. As Mrs. Newton continues with her speech she begins to talk about how she couldn't find herself and didn't value herself. Essentially she was depressed like Holden because of her lack of identity to fit in. throughout the book Holden references his depression many times mostly because of his self alienation. Essentially he was causing his own depression and for the most part did not realize it where as Mrs. Newton has and her alienation is because she thinks she doesn't fit in based on her skin color. Holden does not fit in because of his ideals such as hating school and many more finally Mrs. Newton concludes with an idea of the self is a projection not a functioning living thing. That it is something that can be lost and for her she lost herself when she was dancing and in that time the feeling of oneness was a liberating feeling. That freed herself and Holden felt when he was writing and could feel that oneness and free him self from that depression.
