This Ted talk by David R. Dow is titled Lessons from death row inmates. David is a death row lawyer and as he talks about his job he has come to the conclusion that there are four stages in death row cases. He talks about them and goes into depth about how as the years have gone on and past the number of people convicted in Texas to death row was drastically decreasing while the number of executions per year is not decreasing. This relates to In Cold Blood in that Dick and Perry are in this situation more over Perry. David begins to conclude later in the video around the 10 minute mark that if instead of trying to simplify the problem we expand it. Such as instead of the four chapters to crime we try to prevent crime in earlier younger stages in these criminals lives. Perry was on this path some of the suggestions that David suggests are those that Perry would have qualified for and could have prevented the first reason for Perry ever being in prison. David says that the legal system instead of paying up front is paying later. Saying for every 15,000 dollars we spend to prevent the problem if we do nothing it ends up being an 80,000 dollar problem plus the use of social resources. David concludes that spending this money up front in economically disadvantaged households along with disadvantaged people in general could prevent 3 out of every 4 death row cases. Also preventing the murders in general. With Perry he got started on the wrong path as a child. His lack of education lead him down the wrong path. Maybe if Perry had been more educated he would have made better decisions. Also Perry growing up in his abusive household would lead him to being more abusive aggressive and 10x more likely to commit dangerous crime as said by David. finally he concludes with an excerpt from one of his previous clients. his clients name was Will and he was on death row for a murder he had committed. He grew up in an abusive household and his father was never around and his mother tried to kill him at the age of 5 with a butcher knife. eventually he bounced from family member to family member and was living on his own by the age of 9. the day his client was about to be put to death he asked if will had really remembered being chased by his mother with a butcher knife around the house and Will "responded with when your hiding in the bathroom door locked and and screaming for help until the cops arrive that is something I could never forget".Which directly relates to the same story of Perry except instead of almost being killed was constantly abused leading his along the same path as Will.
